9 Heart-Warming Stories That’ll Change the Way You Think About Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romantic relationships.

No, it’s about that happiness you feel spending time with a friend.

It’s about those butterflies you feel when you see your dog after a long day at work.

It’s your Grandma bringing you another round of sandwiches.

It’s about all those heart-warming relationships that make our lives amazing.

Valentine’s Day is about feeling loved and being in-love, whatever form that love takes.

It can even be the love you feel towards that slice of cake. That delicious slice of cake.

That’s why we wanted to write something a bit different this Valentine’s Day.

So, here are our 9 favourite heart-warming stories that’re sure to brighten-up your day, and change the way you think about Valentine’s Day.

1. The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, Illustrated by E.H. Shepard

Everyone loves Pooh-bear. He’s the epitome of what it means to love. Simple. And what Benjamin Hoff noticed was that the ‘Way of Pooh’ is very much like Taoism, the Chinese philosophical tradition of living in harmony with everything around you. It’s also about staying calm under pressure; of staying happy.

The Tao of Pooh is sure to bring a smile to your face this Valentine’s Day.

2. Pax by Sara Pennypacker

We’ve spoken about this book before, in our books for pre-teens post, but we’ll speak about it again because it’s just THAT good. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that you’ll re-read time and time again.

It’s the moving story of friendship between a boy and his fox, and their journey to be reunited. It’s about friendship, yes, but ultimately, it’s about the love the boy has towards his fox.

3. The Lost Spells Robert Macfarlane & Jackie Morris

Another book we’ve mentioned in the past in our favourite nature books post, but this is just such a perfect heart-warming read, we had to include it again.

It’s a magical book full of beautiful poems and illustrations. You’ll fall back in-love with this planet we call home, and with all the wonderous wildlife that’re here, too.

Share the love with others by reading the poems out loud and treasure the heart-warming feeling of making others smile.

4. A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen

If you’re a pet owner and you haven’t read this yet, you need to change that! A Street Cat Named Bob is about the unbreakable connection of love between a man and his cat. Both having lived rough on the streets of London, when their paths cross, their lives are changed forever.

It’s an uplifting story of what happens when we take a leap of faith, of when we share our love and help others.

5. One Day by David Nicholls

Okay, so this is technically a love-story in the conventional sense, but it’s so heart-wrenchingly good that we had to include it on this list.

It’s the tale of two people, Emma, and Dexter, who meet on the night of their graduation. One day, then they have to part and go their separate ways. Where will they be on that day next year? Or the year after? One day, twenty years. This witty, emotional story is one you can’t miss.

Warning: 100% will make you cry.

6. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Have you ever wanted a second chance? A chance to redo past regrets, to fix problems. Nora does too, and when she finds herself in the library between life and death, she has the chance to do just that. But, things don’t go exactly as planned.

If you’ve ever wanted to read a book that’ll make you feel hopeful about your life, that’ll make you realise you have the power to take control, and create the life that you want, with no regrets, then read The Midnight Library.

7. The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri

Beautifully written, poignant. Emotionally charged and spirited. War destroys all in Aleppo, a city in Syria, meaning Nuri and Afra must escape. They must go on an impossible journey to find each other again, amongst the chaos.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo will reignite your love of stories, and the power that they hold. It’ll also remind you of the depths the human heart is willing to go to for the places and people it loves.

8. Milk and Honey Rupi Kaur

Written originally as Instagram posts, Rupi Kaur’s poetry is simple, but gets to the crux of the issue quickly. In her debut collection, Milk and Honey, each chapter deals with a different heartache, a different pain. With her words, Rupi Kaur will help you to heal, to bring the magic back into your life. Her poems are heart-warming and by the end of the collection, you’re sure to feel so amazing, and so much in-love.

9. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer

This is an amazing book that’ll make you feel all cosy and wonderful this Valentine’s Day.

It’s 1946 and the war has ended, and Juliet Ashton has writer’s block. That is, until she receives a letter from Guernsey. A letter from a total stranger. A letter that changes Juliet’s life forever.

This is an entertaining and touching period novel, that’s definitely earned its place on our list of heart-warming reads.
